Dawn Rothwell is the President and founder of Reiki Rays Institute. She holds a BA, Magna Cum Laude, in English Literature, and has completed graduate and post graduate studies in Holistic Health, Divinity, and Metaphysics. Dawn is trained in several Traditional and Western Reiki traditions, and holds certification in Yoga, Parapsychology, Hypnotherapy, and over two dozen holistic modalities, many of which she teaches on this site and in workshops in her area. She is an ordained minister and a Licensed Spiritual Health Coach. Locally, she serves as a Prayer Chaplain for Unity Church of Lawrence, KS.
A renowned Tarot consultant, she is recognized by the Tarot Certification Board of America as a Certified Tarot Master Instructor, an honor bestowed to only a handful of individuals worldwide. She is also the author of the highly acclaimed book, Insight Tarot.
Dawn is a founding member of The Aruna Center for Spiritual Transformation which is a network of holistic and metaphysical practitioners offering their services locally as well as online.
Dawn practices Kriya Yoga and is initiated as a second generation disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda. She was given the name Aruna by Swami Kriyananda soon after her Kriyaban ceremony. In her free time, she enjoys baking, vegan cooking, meditation, yoga, reading inspirational literature, being in nature, and playtime at home with her ten cats.
Q: Explain what Reiki is in simple terms.
Reiki is Japanese for Universal Life Energy, and therefore is the energy of the Universe that is in us, around us, and what flows through us.
Q: How is this different from energy healing or acupressure?
Reiki is a form of energy healing which uses certain hand positions, symbols, and an attunement process to perform correctly. Energy healing is a broad category that can include any form of exchange of energy from practitioner to recipient. Energy therapy does not require physical touch of the recipient, and most forms of energy therapy can be performed remotely with the recipient being in a different place or time zone than the practitioner.
Acupressure uses specific touch/pressure on set points on the body and is often used in massage or bodywork.
Q: What inspired you to become a Reiki Master?
I was called to do so, spiritually, but did not know how to receive the master level, as it was expensive and hard to find a master. When a friend of mine who was a nurse wanted to study reiki, we committed to doing it together. She changed her mind whereas I quit my "day job" to do this full time.
Q. What benefits have you personally received from being a Reiki Master?
Weight loss, increased inner peace, reduced allergy symptoms. pain relief for headaches, stomachaches, and other body pains, younger appearance, and clearer skin.
Q: What makes you stand out from the other Reiki Masters?
I have studied additional courses, leading to an MS and PhD in holistic therapies, as well as a Doctor of Naturopathic Science, and a Doctor of Divinity. I combine natural health along with spiritual healing for optimum results.
Q: Do you perform Distance/Absentee Reiki?
Yes
Q: Can you explain how that works.
There is a symbol in level 2 designed specifically to do distance healings as well as attunements, which most courses go into, in detail. I do distance work so frequently that I almost cannot explain how it works, but the results are incredible.
Q: What is one of your more memorable Reiki sessions and why?
Someone who was out of work for months with a shoulder injury had recovery in one session and was able to return to work without restrictions or pain medication in two days. Its memorable because it was my first official session as a professional healer.
Q: How do you feel that Reiki fits in with 'healing the world'?
Reiki is preventive, and therefore can help someone identify imbalances before it becomes a full blown condition. Its free to do, no side effects, and can work with any other modality, traditional or holistic for improved results.
Anything else you would like to add:
Its so easy to learn that I attuned several of my cats and even they can do reiki. One cat actually rescued another cat from choking, right before my eyes, by applying pressure and reiki "paws"!
